Tarot Basics: What Is Tarot?

Describing what Tarot really is can be a little challenging, simply because each reader has a unique view on the cards and how, or why, they seem to work so well. The honest truth is that Tarot isn't infallible because people interpret the cards based on their own unique view of the world and the experiences that they have had with the cards. First, let's talk about the images.

Most Tarot readers believe, as I do, that the images are based on meanings that every person can look at and determine the meaning. Carl Jung called these figures archetypes. Archetypes are something that everyone can relate to. Some Tarot readers will focus on a specific aspect of the card intuitively during a reading to convey a message. Others simply read the card at face value. The reality is that a combination of these methods provides the most successful Tarot readings for clients. Tarot does provide insights into life.

Sometimes, it is a shocking revelation that you never expected. More often, it's like a whisper that reveals itself over time. One thing I have noticed, and tend to believe, is that the cards have a message that you can ignore but that whatever the message it, it is something that you can count on unless you are willing to evaluate your path and make changes.

On the other hand, when Tarot is sending you a message about someone else, you can pretty much expect it to happen. Confusing, I know. I think that the way the reader interprets and connects to their own Tarot cards is an important part of reading. One reader may see the Tower card as a catastrophe, while another may describe it as an opportunity.

Tarot can show you things that are or will happen, but it doesn't mean that you can't change your path. Free will is an aspect of life that you can control, regardless of what the card do or don't say. If a Tarot reader tells you that something is going to happen and it doesn't, or even if it does, the things that happen in your life are completely in your control.

So what does this complicated sounding explanation mean to you? Only that Tarot readings are there to help you look at the options available and find insights into your current situations. Most Tarot readers aren't psychics, even if they are excellent observers with a lot of good common sense ;) Tarot, and the things that a Tarot reader tells you, aren't set in stone. You have the ability to change your life, not a deck of cards. Tarot is a tool that can help you reflect on your life, not something that controls it.
